UB Athletics

Students interested to combat violent behavior may be offered self-defense workshops by UB Athletics. Students must have a valid UB Student ID Card and Intramural Sports Permit Card to be eligible for these seminars. Students must show respect for both Recreation staff and opponents when participating in Intramural sports. An offense can result in the University suspending a team, declaring forfeits against either one or both of their teams, and/or stopping a contest.

These workshops can be taught by Rape Aggression Defense officers who are certified by University at Buffalo Police Department. Anyone interested in preventing or assisting sexual assault is welcome to these workshops. These workshops are free and open to all members of the UB Community. All participants are welcome to all workshops, provided they are UB students. Women and men can also attend seminars on the topic. Renzo Gracie Academy

Greenpoint's Renzo Gracie Academy hosted a self-defense class for women on March 19. Arthan Bandeira, instructor at the academy, was the guest instructor. Chen and Bandeira organized the seminar after a number of her clients requested one. The two have been training together three years now and have been practicing at the least twice daily. The first seminar taught students the basics of defense against various threats.


Master Renzo Graci, 6th degree black belt, is the instructor. Renzo was born and raised in Brazil. He moved to New York in 1998. The academy's distinctive teaching style is built on a system which can prevent an individual from being attacked. The academy's renowned teaching style teaches students to have confidence and fight with ease. Students also learn how to remain composed and calm under pressure. They are encouraged and supported to practice martial arts together, and to be able to manage their bodies to protect themselves.

Krav Maga Institute
